According to Daily Mail, AS Roma are interested in Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Jose Mourinho has identified the Chelsea midfielder as his next target, with the Giallorossi already making an approach. Their transfer chief Tiago Pinto is working hard to get the deal done before the end of the ongoing summer transfer window next week.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s Spell At Chelsea
Part of the Chelsea youth setup since 2004, at the age of just eight, Ruben Loftus-Cheek has had a mixed spell at Stamford Bridge. He was always seen as a future prospect for the club but has never really managed to establish himself as a key player despite receiving substantial recognition.
In recent years, the midfielder has had a difficult time with injuries, notably featuring in just seven matches during the 2019/20 campaign. It was followed by a loan spell to Fulham last season, where the Englishman appeared in 30 league matches but was unable to prevent the Cotaggers from going down.
Overall, Loftus-Cheek has made a total of 82 competitive appearances for Chelsea. He has built a reputation for being a midfield workhorse who can influence the game going forward and is equally competent in the second line of press.
It is mainly the reason why Jose Mourinho is interested in the Chelsea starlet, as he can offer the creative essence in the final third whilst tuning in well with his defensive-oriented tactical philosophy.
Should Chelsea Offload The Midfielder?
Chelsea are in desperate need of some reformation in their midfield unit. The likes of Jorginho and N’Golo Kante have established themselves as among the best in the business, but the club has a stacked midfield unit with a host of unwanted players still remaining a part of the squad.
One of them is Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who certainly has no future at Stamford Bridge. The Englishman is trailing Mateo Kovacic, Kante and Jorginho in the pecking order, and it won’t be surprising to see Tuchel signing one more midfielder before the end of the transfer window.
On that note, Loftus-Cheek’s departure from London could go a long way in giving the club a major financial boost in these remaining days of the window. It could help them fund move for their midfield and defensive targets whilst clearing up some space in the stacked midfield unit.
Roma could be an excellent destination for Loftus-Cheek as well, as the midfielder can reunite with his former manager Mourinho and teammate Tammy Abraham. His style of play is ideally suited to their tactical philosophy, potentially giving the Englishman an ideal platform to revive his career.
