Rennes sporting director Florian Maurice has confirmed that Eduardo Camavinga wants to leave the club in the ongoing transfer window.
“I know what he wants,” Maurice said on France Bleu Armorique (quoted by Fussball Transfers).
“We now have to find a solution that satisfies both parties.”
“When a player’s contract expires, we either renew it and find a solution, or we have to find a solution to an exit.”
The highly-rated youngster has only a year remaining on his current contract, and given the fact that he is unwilling to renew, Rennes might sell him for the best possible value rather than letting him leave for free next summer.
Although Manchester United is one of the possible destinations for the Frenchman, his first and foremost preference is to play in Spain.
Camavinga’s Phenomenal Rise To The Top
In a season where Rennes managed to secure the 6th spot in their domestic league with 58 points in 38 games, the 18-year-old midfielder was ranked as one of his side’s top performers with an average WhoScored rating of 6.80. The teenager enjoyed a fantastic second season for the Red and Blacks as he made 35 league appearances last season, coming off the bench on seven occasions.
Camavinga managed to put up some awe-inspiring numbers on the board the last term as he averaged 2.8 tackles, 0.4 clearances, and 0.7 interceptions per 90 minutes in Ligue 1 (calculated over 35 appearances). Moreover, with 1.7 long balls played per game with an overall pass accuracy of 89%, he was one of the best distributors of the ball in the French top-flight.
These numbers underline the defensive aspect of his game – holding on to the ball when needed, winning the ball back, and even picking up the right man on the other end of the pitch to start counter-attacks effortlessly.
Even though the 3-times France international is naturally suited to the central midfield role, his versatility allows him to operate across the entire midfield region – be it as a holding or a defensive midfielder. However, given his tender age, it’s quite hard to predict how he would adapt to the harsh nature of the Premier League. Nonetheless, with the wide array of technical abilities he possesses, he’d be a brilliant addition to any top European club at the moment.
The Perfect Fit For United’s Midfield?
Nemanja Matic is not getting any younger, whereas Paul Pogba’s future at the club seems uncertain as he hasn’t renewed his contract yet. In the long term, Eduardo Camavinga can act as a direct replacement for his countryman, but he could be initially asked to fill in the defensive midfield position.
Solskjaer’s over-reliance on the Mc-Fred double-pivot last season let him down on countless occasions, so the teenager’s arrival at Old Trafford will undoubtedly feel like a breath of fresh air to the Norwegian coach.
Hence, if the French outfit put on an affordable price tag on the player, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should definitely try and get the deal over the line in the coming weeks.
