According to Max Bielefeld, Diogo Dalot could join Borussia Dortmund on loan. The Bundesliga giants have reached an agreement with Manchester United over a loan deal with an obligation to buy next summer for the Portuguese international. However, nothing is finalised as United require a new signing at right-back before they can allow Dalot to leave.
Do Man United Require Dalot?
Diogo Dalot has had a frustrating spell at Manchester United since joining the club in 2018. He has had difficulties establishing himself as a proper first-team candidate, notably featuring in just 20 league matches in his first two seasons before eventually joining AC Milan on loan in 2020.
The Portuguese right-back wasn’t a first-choice starter at Milan either. He had to play second fiddle to Davide Calabria. But his versatility saw him playing in over 1,000 minutes of league football, even getting a chance to represent Portugal in Euro 2o20, coming in as a replacement for the injured Joao Cancelo.
However, despite his struggles, Dalot could be required at Man United in the ongoing campaign. Although he is currently the second choice behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the club lacks a proper alternative for the former Crystal Palace starlet and that is where Dalot comes into the fray.
His presence in the side could indeed be vital in a long season that will force Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer to experiment with his starting eleven. Moreover, the youngster’s ability to play as a left-back could come in handy as well, especially with Alex Telles out injured right now.
Why A Move To Borussia Dortmund Could Make Sense?
Diogo Dalot’s potential arrival at Borussia Dortmund could turn out to be an ideal move for both the club and the player. The Black and Yellows are currently undergoing a crisis in the defensive department, with the club particularly lacking fullbacks.
At right-back, the departure of Lukasz Piszczek, coupled with the injury of Mateu Morey has left Marco Rose to rely on the services of Thomas Meunier and Felix Passlack. Meunier clearly hasn’t got going at Dortmund while Passlack simply isn’t cut out for top-flight football.
Therefore, Dalot has an excellent opportunity of potentially becoming BVB’s top-choice right-back next season. His attacking prowess could make him an ideal replacement for Achraf Hakimi, one that the club desperately requires in order to succeed and challenge Bayern Munich for the title next season.
However, with Man United persistent on keeping hold of Dalot unless they sign a new right-back, a move to Signal Iduna Park appears to be unlikely. The Red Devils are also not expected to find any breakthrough in the pursuit of Kieran Trippier, with Atletico Madrid holding out for a hefty price-tag of €40 million.
