In a recent report, ESPN reported that Manchester City could move in for Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer. It is believed that Man City have identified the Gabon international as an ideal last-minute option if they fail to land Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur before the end of this month.
Aubameyang’s Inconsistent Form At The Emirates Stadium Last Season
Aubameyang had an up and down season at North London last season as he struggled to be consistent with his contributions in front of the opposition goal. The 32-year-old banged in 15 goals and secured four assists in 39 matches for the Gunners in the previous campaign across all fronts.
Besides his goals, the former Borussia Dortmund striker failed to contribute in too many other meaningful ways after he averaged 2.0 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per game in the Premier League last season. At least, he interchanged possession relatively well with his teammates in the opponent’s half based on his pass completion rate of 78% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
At 32, Aubameyang has only got a handful of years left in him to play at a high level. Therefore, he could serve as a decent, short-term option for Man City to consider this summer as they are in dire need to add more firepower to their attack.
What Will Aubameyang Add To Pep Guardiola’s Side?
Aubameyang can still use his pace effectively to get in behind the opposition backline. He can play as a left-sided wide player or in his usual position as a centre-forward up top. The 62-time Gabon international can still be a deadly finisher in front of the opposition goal and can also chip in by picking up the odd assist. He is definitely good enough to lead the line for a club like Man City week in week out in the Premier League this season.
Aubameyang could even improve his attacking numbers if he joins Man City as he will have far better service around him at the Etihad Stadium. Plus, an experienced manager like Pep Guardiola could unlock the best out of him in the coming seasons.
The Gabonese talent will add a lot of experience and goals to Man City’s attack and could go on to form a productive attacking partnership with the likes of Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling over the next few years.
