Recent reports from The Athletic suggest that La Liga side Granada are keen on signing former Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero in the ongoing transfer window.
The 34-year-old became a free agent after his contract with United expired in June earlier this year. Granada have been in the market for a new number one since Rui Silva’s departure for Real Betis, and it seems that they have found their man in the ex-United shot-stopper as he is set to be offered a two-year contract with the Spanish side.
Reviewing Romero’s Time At Old Trafford
Sergio Romero joined Manchester United from Italian club Sampdoria in the summer of 2015, but he never quite managed to climb above David de Gea in the pecking order.
He featured only 61 times for the Red Devils over the course of the last six years, but only seven of them came in the Premier League.
Nonetheless, he had his moments in the United jersey – the 2016/17 Europa League campaign where he recorded 12 appearances and won the competition itself.
He put up some noteworthy performances in the 2019/20 Europa League campaign as well before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, out of nowhere, made a terrible decision by starting David de Gea over him in the semi-finals. What followed was a 2-1 loss at The Theatre of Dreams.
The 2020/21 season saw Dean Henderson establish himself as an integral part of Solskjaer’s squad, and as a result, the 96-times Argentina international was limited to zero appearances for the season.
A Fresh Start For The Player?
At 34, Romero has plenty of football left in him, and a move to Granada has the potential to get his career back on track. He will surely be the first choice goalkeeper at his new club as the other goalkeeper – Aaron Escandell Banacloche – has only six senior appearances under his belt, whereas Romero is on a completely different level in terms of experience.
If he manages to stay fit and play his part in between the sticks on a weekly basis, he’ll turn out to be a valuable addition to the Granada side that finished ninth in the domestic league last season.
Hence, this move makes perfect sense for all the parties involved.
