Chelsea have recently confirmed on their official website that Michy Batshuayi has penned a new contract with the club before being loaned out to Besiktas for the remainder of this 2021-22 campaign. It has been revealed that the Belgian marksman has signed a new deal with the Blues which runs out in the summer of 2023.
Batshuayi’s Lacklustre Loan Spell At Selhurst Park Last Season
Batshuayi had an underwhelming loan spell at Crystal Palace last season as he struggled to find some consistency with his contributions in the attacking end of the field. The 27-year-old was involved in 20 matches for the Eagles in the previous campaign, finding the back of the net twice and providing two assists in all competitions.
The Belgian international failed to give a good account of himself because most of his appearances came off the bench. Hence, it is no surprise that Batshuayi ended the last campaign with an average of 0.7 shots, 0.5 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He was also a bit careless when interchanging possession with his teammates in the final third after making 71.3% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Batshuayi needs a regular run of games over the next 12 months if he wants to get his career back on the right track. Hence, Chelsea’s decision to loan him out to Besiktas seems like a wise move during this summer transfer period.
Batshuayi Pens New Contract With Chelsea: Good Move For Everyone Involved?
Batshuayi is a quick and agile striker who can make some good runs behind the opponent’s backline. The 35-time Belgian international can use his strong 1.85m frame to hold off challenges from the opposition centre-backs and has shown that he can be a tidy finisher in the final third when he is playing well on the pitch.
However, the lack of consistency in terms of goal-scoring is something that the talented frontman must rectify if he intends to be a success story at Stamford Bridge in the future. Going on loan to Besiktas will be another opportunity for Batshuayi to show Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel what he is capable of so that he can secure a place in the German head coach’s squad next season.
Even if the Belgian striker fails to impress during his time at Turkey, the West London club will now have the option to cash in on him next summer. Hence, it seems like a good move for both the player and the London club this summer.
