According to renowned journalist Marc Marba (via Beteve), Barcelona‘s new signing Sergio Aguero wants to cancel his contract. It is believed that the Catalan centre-forward is unhappy that his friend and fellow countryman, Lionel Messi did not re-sign with Barca that has led to him wanting to terminate his contract at the Nou Camp.
Aguero’s Injury-Ravaged Campaign At The Etihad Stadium Last Season
Aguero endured an injury-plagued season at Manchester City as he missed several matches because of multiple injuries. He struggled to secure a regular run of games in Pep Guardiola’s first-team and only made 20 appearances for the Mancunian outfit in the previous campaign, netting six goals and securing one assist in the process across all fronts.
The 33-year-old failed to be consistent with his offensive contributions after he averaged 1.6 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in the 2020-21 Premier League season. However, he distributed the ball with conviction based on his pass completion rate of 80.7% in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
Aguero is way past his prime but could enjoy playing in the much slower-paced Spanish football. However, the reports (if accurate) about his desire to cancel his contract with Barca soon after his arrival earlier this summer will come as a shock to anyone associated with the Catalan club.
Can The Catalan Club Afford To Lose Aguero This Summer?
On his day, Aguero can still be a match-winner for his team as he is an unforgiving finisher in the final third. He has a knack for finding space in and around the opponent’s penalty box and is proficient at getting a few shots in on-target.
The experienced Argentine international can even link-up play quite well when he is firing on all cylinders up top. However, there is no denying that father time is catching up with his game. At 33, Aguero has only got a handful of good years left in him, so Barca simply cannot afford to lose him, especially after they failed to keep Messi at the Nou Camp beyond this summer.
Ronald Koeman has to figure out a way to keep Aguero happy as he has the potential to strike up a fruitful attacking partnership with Memphis Depay and Antoine Griezmann (if he stays) in the coming seasons. Messi’s abrupt exit has left Barca’s frontline in tatters, so Koeman needs an experienced head like Aguero to ease Barca’s attacking concerns for the new campaign.
