Il Messaggero has recently reported that Aston Villa are locked in a three-way battle for Lazio striker Joaquin Correa in this off-season. It is understood that the Villans could face competition in the form of Everton and Leicester City in pursuit of the Argentine frontman this summer (via Il Messaggero).
Correa’s Decent Run Of Form In Italian Football Last Season
Correa put up impressive numbers at the Stadio Olimpico in the previous campaign as he produced some eye-catching displays as the spearhead of the Lazio attack. The former Sevilla forward banged in 11 goals and grabbed six assists in 38 matches for the Italian outfit last season in multiple competitions.
The Argentine marksman caught the eye by averaging 1.9 shots, 1.0 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game in the 2020-21 Serie A campaign. He was also excellent with his ball distribution after he made 83.2% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Correa took great strides towards improving himself in Italian football over the past 12 months. Hence, the 26-year-old could be a good signing for the Villans this summer as he will offer some healthy competition for Ollie Watkins for a place in Dean Smith’s starting XI next season.
Will Correa Be The Right Choice For The Villans This Summer?
Correa has decent pace in his locker which he can use to get in behind the opposition defence and cause a lot of problems for his marker in the final third. He is a good finisher in front of the opponent’s goal and usually keeps things tidy when passing the ball to his teammates up top. Correa is primarily a striker but can also operate as a left-winger or function in the number ten position as an attacking midfielder if needed.
Standing at 1.88m, the Argentine talent can be a real handful for the opposition centre-halves because of his strength and good work ethic. However, he needs to be more prolific in terms of goal-scoring if he wants to be a success story at Villa Park next season.
Correa has what it takes to become a key asset in Smith’s squad and could help the Villans challenge for a top-half finish in the English top-flight. Therefore, the West Midlands outfit should think about engineering a move to secure the services of the Argentine international during this summer transfer period. At 26, Correa is currently playing at his prime and would enhance the overall depth of Smith’s match-day squad that makes him a good choice for Aston Villa to consider before the end of this month.
