In a recent report, Calciomercato stated that Aston Villa are facing stiff competition for Sampdoria winger Mikkel Damsgaard. It is understood that the Villans will have to rival Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus, AC Milan and Roma in pursuit of the Danish wide player.
Damsgaard’s Recent Form For Both Club And Country
Damsgaard recently caught the eye with his performances for the Danish national side in the UEFA European Championships earlier this summer. The Jyllinge-born wing wizard struggled to be consistent with his offensive contributions as he could only score two goals and provide four assists in 37 appearances for the Italian outfit last season across multiple competitions.
The 21-year-old deserves some credit for averaging 1.2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.7 shots, 0.7 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A football. However, he has to figure out a way to improve his accuracy when distributing possession in the opposition half based on his pass success rate of 73.3% in the Italian first division (stats via whoscored).
Damsgaard has shown some promising signs with his performances at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium over the past 12 months. Hence, he will be a good signing for the Villans in the long run as he could grow into a class act on the flanks at Villa Park over the next few years.
What Will Damsgaard Bring To Villa Park?
Damsgaard is a quick and agile winger who can make some intelligent runs in the final third. He has done well to add a few goals and assists to his game but needs to be more decisive in front of the opponent’s goal if he wants to improve his productivity in the attacking end of the field.
The Denmark international is primarily a left-winger but can also operate in the number ten position or play as a more reserved box-to-box midfielder if required. We can expect him to bring a lot of energy and dynamism to Aston Villa’s frontline. Plus, Damsgaard could serve as a decent replacement for Jack Grealish who sealed a blockbuster move to Manchester City recently.
The Danish sensation is already good enough to compete with Anwar El Ghazi, Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey for a place in the Villans’ starting XI. He could even help the West Midlands outfit challenge for a top-half finish in the Premier League this season. All in all, Smith should consider bringing Damsgaard to Villa Park before the transfer deadline on August 31st as he has the potential to become a future star at the highest level.
