In a recent report, Football.London mentioned that Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is set to join Fiorentina on loan this summer. It is understood that the Uruguayan midfielder is not part of Mikel Arteta’s plans for this campaign which is why the Gunners have decided to loan him out this month, with the Florence outfit also having the option to sign him permanently at the end of this campaign.
Torreira’s Recent Loan Spell At The Wanda Metropolitano
Torreira enjoyed a successful loan spell at Atletico Madrid last season as he helped the Spanish side secure the La Liga title. The South American sensation featured in 26 matches for the Madrid outfit in the previous campaign, scoring one goal and grabbing one assist in the process across multiple competitions.
However, most of the 25-year-old’s appearances came off the bench which explains why he averaged 0.4 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 0.4 clearances per 90 minutes in the Spanish top-flight. The Uruguayan talent was at least tidy with his ball distribution after completing 87.2% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Torreira is clearly surplus to requirements at the Emirates Stadium, so it makes a lot of sense for him to switch clubs before the transfer window slams shut at the end of this month. Joining Fiorentina would ensure the player regular first-team football which will help him get his career back on track.
Torreira Close To Sealing A Move To Fiorentina: Good Move For Everyone Involved?
Torreira is a tough-tackling midfielder who can work hard to chase the opposition down and can offer some decent protection for his teammates at the back. He can also make some clever runs with the ball when he is playing with confidence on the field.
However, the Uruguayan talent struggled to impress during his loan spell at Madrid despite winning the league title with Atletico earlier this year. Therefore, Arsenal has no reason to keep him at North London if Arteta doesn’t fancy playing him every week.
The Gunners can benefit from selling Torreira as it will lower their wage bill for other incoming transfers this month. Now that Torreira looks set to make a loan switch to Fiorentina, it will be a good move for both the player and the North London club, especially if the Italian outfit end up buying him permanently next summer.
