Rangers registered a 3-0 win last weekend to kickstart their title defence. They had a setback in Europe on Tuesday night, and the gaffer Steven Gerrard demanded a spirited show this afternoon against Dundee United to uplift the spirit within the camp. But it turned out to be a nightmare at Tannadice as the underwhelming Gers suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat against the Tangerines.
Below are the Rangers players rated in their 1-0 defeat against Dundee United.
Jon McLaughlin: 6
Made a good save at the back post to deny Charlie Mulgrew’s header. Could have done little to stop Jamie Robson’s goal against the run of play in the second half.
James Tavernier: 5.5
It’s high time that he intelligently manages his adventurous runs and concentres on defensive work rate. His lethargic movement allowed Robson to pick up the deflected ball before finding the back of the net. Tested Benjamin Siegrist in United goal on a couple of occasions.
Connor Goldson: 5.5
A bit rusty at times while tackling. Could have earned an equaliser minutes after the Tangerines’ strike. But his header went inches past the post. It was just one of those days.
Filip Helander: 6.5
Did not have a busy outing as the hosts posed rare attacking threats inside the box, especially in the second half. Tried to play it quickly from the back to inject pace in transitions.
Borna Barisic: 5.5
Yet to meet the standards set during the previous campaigns. Made some overlapping runs, whipped in a few crosses. But his attempts lacked accuracy and variation all throughout the contest.
Steven Davis: 6.5
Maintained his composure in the middle of the park as he dominated the show with pressing, holding, as well as disturbing the opposition players across the pitch. Rangers dominated possession, and the 36-year-old Northern Irishman remains the main reason behind their midfield domination.
Glen Kamara: 6
Was not effective enough while carrying the ball forward. His passing was impressive, but the lack of creativity high up the pitch resulted in disappointment after 90 minutes.
John Lundstram: 5
A bad day at the office. Still early days, but the signs are alarming as he is visibly struggling to attune to the pace and physicality. Something that we don’t expect from someone who excelled in the Premier League. Made way for Scott Wright midway through the second half.
Joe Aribo: 7
Worked hard to regain possession, tried to be productive in the attacking third with smart one-twos, link-up play and swift footwork. Arguably the most promising Rangers player this afternoon.
Ryan Kent: 5.5
An outing to forget for the Englishman who was well contained by the Dundee United backline. Tried to apply his trickery from the wide areas but hardly managed to make a difference before making way for Cedric Itten late in the match.
Alfredo Morelos: 6
The Colombian was handed an instant start ahead of the others. Looked lively, missed a few chances, but at the same time, failed to produce anything spectacular while spearheading the Bears’ attack. Got replaced by Jermain Defoe in the closing minutes of the match.
Rangers Substitutes Vs Dundee United
Scott Wright: 6
Had a few decent runs down the flank. However, his inclusion did not change the scenario of the match.
Cedric Itten: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
Jermain Defoe: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
