In a recent report, Football.London claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are open to selling Harry Winks amid interest from Aston Villa this summer. It is understood that the English midfielder wants to stay in North London beyond this summer but Spurs are willing to entertain offers for him to raise funds for incoming transfers which could open the door for the Villans to land him in this off-season (via Football.London).
Winks’ Unimpressive Season In English Football
Winks played a sporadic role for the London giants last season which could be why he struggled to find consistency with his performances at the centre of the park. The Hemel Hempstead-born talent made 30 appearances for his current employers in the previous campaign across all fronts.
The 25-year-old impresses in patches at the English capital as he averaged 1.1 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 0.7 clearances per 90 minutes in Premier League football. However, he was tidy with his ball distribution, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 84.9% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
The English sensation’s current contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expires in the summer of 2024. However, Spurs might consider cashing in on him and use the money generated from his potential sale to strengthen other areas of their squad.
Is Winks The Right Choice For The Villans?
Winks can get stuck in with a few tackles to hamper the opposition’s rhythm at the centre of the park. He can even work hard to earn possession back for his side and is a good passer of the ball as well. The ten-time England international can also put his foot through the ball to clear his lines when the opposition are on the offensive. However, he was involved in just four goals for Tottenham last season.
Hence, Winks needs to work on improving his productivity in both halves if he wants to be a success story at Villa Park in the coming seasons. The Villans could benefit from recruiting a player of his skillset as he will bolster Dean Smith’s midfield options ahead of the new campaign.
Winks will undoubtedly add some healthy competition for John McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Marvelous Nakamba and Mordan Sanson for a place in Smith’s starting XI. He could also help the West Midlands outfit challenge for a top-half finish in the 2020-21 Premier League campaign. All in all, Winks would be a clever choice for the Villans as he is about to enter the peak years of his career which means that Smith can expect to get the best out of him over the next few seasons.
