In a recent report, The Chronicle stated that Newcastle United have been offered a chance to land Red Bull Leipzig winger Ademola Lookman this summer. It is understood that the Magpies could face competition in the form of Southampton in the race to recruit the English wide player during this summer transfer window (via The Chronicle).
Lookman’s Encouraging Loan Spell At Craven Cottage Recently
Lookman had an impressive loan spell at Fulham last season as he produced a few productive displays for them down the left flank. However, his contributions were not enough to keep the Cottagers in the Premier League.
The 23-year-old found the back of the net on four occasions and picked up four assists in 35 matches for the London outfit in the previous campaign across multiple competitions. Lookman was a consistent performer at Craven Cottage after he averaged 1.0 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 2.0 shots, 1.8 key passes and 2.4 dribbles per game in the Premier League last season. He even distributed the ball relatively well in the final third as he made 80.9% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
Lookman’s current deal at Leipzig is set to run out in the summer of 2024, so the Magpies have to make a sizable offer if they are to stand a chance of securing his services in this off-season. At 23, he is in for a very bright future in English football which makes him a great, long-term option for Steve Bruce to consider this summer.
Should The Magpies Get Lookman On Board This Summer?
Lookman is a quick and agile winger who can make some promising runs in behind the opponent’s backline. He can cut open the opposition defence with a killer pass in the final third and can also get his name on the scoresheet when he is playing with confidence on the field. The talented playmaker is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also operate as a right-sided winger or as a secondary striker down the middle.
The English sensational also works hard for his side on the defensive end of the field. Hence, he would be a good fit for Bruce’s style of play at St. James’ Park and has what it takes to grow into a top talent in the years to come.
Lookman is a player on the rise and would add a lot of quality to Newcastle’s attacking department for the coming seasons. However, the Magpies might struggle to fund a move to bring the Leipzig winger to the northeast of England as they are working on a shoestring budget in this summer transfer period.
