In a recent report, Bild claimed that Manchester United are showing interest in recruiting Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka this summer. It is understood that the German midfield ace’s current contract with the Bavarian giants is set to expire at the end of next season, so Man United could capitalize on his situation by moving in for him during this summer transfer window (via Bild).
Goretzka’s Impressive Form At The Allianz Arena
Goretzka had another productive season with the Munich outfit after producing a series of consistent performances at the heart of their midfield. The Bochum-born playmaker netted eight goals and secured nine assists in 32 matches for Bayern Munich in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The 26-year-old influenced the game at both ends of the field by averaging 1.5 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, 1.8 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga last season. He even distributed the ball relatively well from midfield as he made 87.7% of his attempted passes in the German first division (stats via whoscored).
The way Goretzka has been playing for both his club and country over the past 12 months, it is no surprise that the Red Devils are interested in bringing him to Old Trafford as he will undoubtedly improve the quality of their first XI in the coming seasons.
Is Goretzka The Right Fit For Man United This Summer?
Goretzka is a moderately-paced midfielder who can make some clever runs with the ball towards the opposition penalty area. He can strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range. Plus, the German international is proficient at setting up a few clear-cut chances for his teammates in the final third. He even works hard on the defensive side of his game and can contribute by making some important interceptions at the centre of the park.
An all-around midfielder of Goretzka’s skill set would be a great option for Man United to consider this summer. He will be an upgrade over Fred, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay at the Threatre of Dreams and could go on to form a productive midfield partnership with Paul Pogba in the years to come.
Goretzka ticks all the right boxes in terms of what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expects from his midfielders. Hence, he will be an excellent fit for the Red Devils as he is good enough to help them close the gap to Manchester City and even challenge for the Premier League title next season. At 26, Goretzka is currently playing at his prime, so we can expect him to make an instant impact at Old Trafford if Solskjaer can secure his signature on a cut-price fee during this summer transfer window.
