In a recent report, Ajansspor stated that Manchester City are facing stiff competition for Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu this summer. It is understood that Man City will have to rival Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Barcelona in the race to land the Turkey international during this summer transfer window (via Ajansspor).
Soyuncu’s Decent Campaign At Leicester
The Izmir-born talent enjoyed another impressive season with the Foxes after putting in some solid performances at the centre of Brendan Rodgers’ defence. Soyuncu participated in 32 matches for the East Midlands side in the previous campaign, scoring one goal and picking up four yellow cards across multiple competitions.
The Turkish sensation performed well to average 1.2 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 3.4 clearances per game in Premier League football last season. The 25-year-old even distributed the ball with a lot of conviction based on his pass completion rate of 88% in the top tier of England (stats via whoscored).
Despite his good form on the field, Soyuncu endured a frustrating period towards the end of 2020 when he missed several matches because of an abductor tear. However, he deserves a lot of credit for coming back to form at the King Power Stadium, so Man City’s interest in him is justified.
Will Soyuncu Be A Good Option For Man City?
Soyuncu is a decent tackler of the ball and has got the tenacity to earn possession back for his team on the defensive end of the pitch. He can clear his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and can use his strong 1.87m frame to win a few 50-50 aerial duels inside his half.
The 38-time Turkey international is proficient at playing his way out from the back, so he will have no trouble settling into Pep Guardiola’s style of play at the Etihad Stadium. Soyuncu has already begun to prove his worth as a reliable central defender in the Premier League but there are some concerns over whether he can replicate his good form in UEFA Champions League football.
Even then, the Foxes star is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot in Guardiola’s first XI next season. At 26, the Turkish defensive ace is about to enter his prime, so there is no doubt that he will be a good option for Man City to consider this summer. Soyuncu would also serve as an upgrade over Nathan Ake whose spell with the Premier League champions has been far from convincing thus far.
