In a recent report, Calciomercato claimed that Liverpool are showing interest in recruiting Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer. It is believed that the Reds are willing to move in for the Serbian midfield ace whose dream is to play for Real Madrid someday (via Calciomercato).
Milinković-Savić’s Excellent Numbers In Italian Football
Milinkovic-Savic had another encouraging season with Lazio after he put in a run of impressive displays at the centre of their midfield. The 26-year-old made 36 appearances for the Italian side in the previous campaign, finding the back of the net on six occasions while securing seven assists in the process on all fronts.
The Serbian sensation gave a good account of himself by averaging 1.9 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.5 clearances, 2.2 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A and the UEFA Europa League last season. He even distributed possession relatively well based on his pass completion rate of 78.7% in league football (stats via whoscored).
Milinković-Savić is still under contract at Lazio until the summer of 2024, so it would take a big offer from the Reds to convince Lazio to part ways with their asset before the start of the new campaign. At 26, the Serbian talent is playing some of his football in Italy which makes him a decent option for Jurgen Klopp to consider in this off-season.
Is Milinković-Savić The Right Choice For The Reds?
Milinkovic-Savic usually works his socks off in midfield and can complete some promising dribbles in the opposition half. He has also begun to contribute by scoring and setting up a few important goals for his side but there are some concerns over whether he would be able to maintain his good form in the Premier League, where he will be tested both physically and mentally week in week out.
Milenkovic-Savic ticks all the right boxes as far as what Klopp demands from his midfielders. Hence, he will be a shrewd buy for the Reds as long as they can land him for a fair price. There is no doubt that the Lazio star will enhance the overall depth of Liverpool’s match-day squad and could offer some serious competition for the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for a regular starting place in Klopp’s first team.
Milinkovic-Savic is currently entering his prime, so Klopp might fancy making the most of his services in the coming seasons. Plus, the Serbian midfield ace could serve as an ideal replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum who left the Merseyside club recently. With all things considered, Milinkovic-Savic will be a great choice for Liverpool as he will help them challenge for even more trophies over the next few years.
