In a recent report, AS mentioned that Liverpool are prepared to make a €40m offer for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez this summer. However, it is understood that the Reds could face competition in the form of Chelsea and Manchester United in pursuit of the Spanish talent during this summer transfer window (via AS).
Saul’s Excellent Season At Wanda Metropolitano
Saul had a sensational campaign with Diego Simeone’s side as he helped them clinch the La Liga title on the final day of the 2020-21 season. The 26-year-old made 41 appearances for the Madrid giants in the previous campaign, finding the back of the net twice and securing one assist on all fronts.
The Spaniard managed to contribute in little ways at both ends of the field after he averaged 1.7 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 1.0 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in La Liga and UEFA Champions League last season. He even distributed possession with conviction based on his pass completion rate of 84.8% in both those competitions (stats via whoscored).
At 26, Saul is currently playing some of the best football of his career, so it is no wonder that Liverpool are lining up a move to bring him to the northwest of England before the start of the new campaign. He is good enough to enhance the quality of the Reds’ starting XI and could even help them win some major silverware in the coming seasons.
Will Saul Be A Good Choice For The Reds This Summer?
Saul is a gifted passer of the ball and has got the vision to create plays for others around him in the opposition half. He excels at keeping possession moving at a high tempo and is not shy about getting stuck in with some crunching tackles to disrupt the opponent’s flow in the game at the centre of the park.
The Spanish midfield ace can even strike the ball with power and precision but needs to figure out a way to improve his end product in the final third. Saul has already proven his worth at the highest level, so he could be tempted with the chance to join Jurgen Klopp’s revolution at Anfield.
The Atletico Madrid star has what it takes to secure a regular starting spot in the Liverpool first team and would undoubtedly add some healthy competition for Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho at the Merseyside club next season. All in all, Saul will be an excellent choice for the Reds to consider in this off-season as he has the experience and skillset to make an instant impact in Premier League football.
