In a recent report, Fichajes journalist Javier Jimenez claims that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso will be perfect for Barcelona this summer. Jimenez believes that the Argentine playing style will suit Barca boss Ronald Koeman’s brand of football quite well at the Nou Camp (via Fichajes).
Lo Celso’s Inconsistent Form In English Football Last Season
Lo Celso had an up and down season at the English capital but deserves credit for putting in a few eye-catching displays for Spurs at the centre of the park despite missing several games because of multiple injuries. The 25-year-old was involved in 28 matches for the London giants in the previous campaign, scoring five goals and providing one assist in the process across multiple competitions.
The Argentine sensation struggled to find consistency with his performances in midfield for Tottenham as he averaged 1.6 tackles, 0.8 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, the Rosario-born talent was hardly guilty of giving away the ball when distributing possession in the opposition half after he completed 81.4% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
At 25, the best is yet to come from Lo Celso, so Barca will do well to lure him to Spain during this summer transfer period. However, Lo Celso’s inconsistent form and poor injury record make him a risky option for the Catalan outfit to consider in this off-season.
Should The Catalans Move In For Lo Celso This Summer?
Lo Celso is a technically gifted footballer who can keep the ball moving without breaking a sweat and can create some decent plays for others around him. He has a knack for finding space and can contribute by netting some important goals for his side.
However, the Argentine sensation has often been guilty of being ineffective when the spotlight is on him. Plus, there are some concerns over his long-term health as he has been far too injury-prone during his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Maybe Lo Celso can benefit from switching clubs and getting away from the physicality and high intensity of English football.
Even then, Barcelona could be an ideal home for him if Ronald Koeman is willing to play him regularly in the coming seasons. He is more than capable of competing with Pedri, Frenkie De Jong and Sergio Busquets for a spot in Barca’s starting XI in the upcoming La Liga campaign. Hence, Koeman should think about moving in for Lo Celso during this summer transfer window.
