In a recent interview with The Transfer Tavern, former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey urged Manchester City to pay £130m for Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane this summer. Howey said,
“The minimum Spurs will take is £100million, but I think Daniel Levy will be wanting something like £130million. Will Pep Guardiola pay that?
“Kane is 28 and probably has another four years left at the top level. He comes deep and gets involved, but he also gets goals. You would think his price tag is going to be around the £130million mark.”
Kane’s Incredible Form In Front Of Goal Last Season
Kane had another incredible season with Spurs recently after continuing to flourish once again as the focal point of their attack. The England international featured in 49 matches for the North London outfit in the previous campaign, scoring 33 goals and picking up 17 assists across multiple competitions.
The London-born striker was quite exceptional with his offensive contributions for Spurs as he averaged 3.9 shots, 1.4 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per game in Premier League football last season. However, he needs to improve his overall link-up play in the final third, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 69.9% in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Kane is still under contract at the North London club until the summer of 2024, so it won’t be a surprise if Spurs chairman Daniel Levy wants to play hard ball with regards to selling his most prized possession this summer.
Should Man City Consider Paying £130m For Kane This Summer?
Kane is amongst the most feared centre-forwards in European football as he can be a goal-scoring machine in the attacking end of the field. He has done everything but win a major trophy during his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, so he could be tempted with a chance to join the reigning Premier League champions this summer.
The 58-time England international can even contribute by picking up his fair share of assists which makes him such an unstoppable force up top. Hence, there is no doubt that Kane will be a dream option for Man City as he will add plenty of goals and assists to Pep Guardiola’s frontline.
The Spurs superstar will be an upgrade over Gabriel Jesus and ticks all the right boxes in terms of what Guardiola expects from his forwards. Therefore, the Man City head coach should consider listening to Howey’s advice by launching an offer close to Spurs’ £130m price tag for the English frontman in this off-season.
Furthermore, Kane would be a perfect successor to Sergio Aguero who sealed a move away from the Etihad Stadium earlier this summer. Signing the English goal-getter would go a long way in helping Man City maintain their dominance in domestic football and even challenge for the UEFA Champions League trophy once again after they bowed down to Chelsea at the final hurdle of the competition last season.
