The Daily Star has recently reported that Chelsea have been offered a chance to land Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann this summer. It is understood that the Blues could sign the French attacker as Barca need to sell him so that they can fund Lionel Messi’s new contract (via The Daily Star).
Griezmann’s Impressive Numbers At The Nou Camp Last Season
Griezmann experienced a fruitful season in Spanish football after he managed to produce several influential displays as a part of Ronald Koeman’s attack. The France international featured in 51 matches for the Catalan giants in the previous campaign, scoring 20 goals and providing 13 assists in multiple competitions.
The 30-year-old caught the eye by averaging 2.0 shots, 1.2 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga last season. He also took care of the ball when distributing possession in the attacking third as he made 87.3% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Barca’s current need to raise funds could spell the end of Griezmann’s time at the Nou Camp which might open the door for the Blues to recruit him during this summer transfer window. Therefore, Thomas Tuchel would be wise to orchestrate a move to bring the Barca striker to Stamford Bridge ahead of the new campaign.
What Will Griezmann Bring To Stamford Bridge?
Griezmann has continued to prove his worth as a decent finisher in front of the opposition goal. He has even got the vision to engineer a few clear-cut opportunities for his teammates up top and can even time his runs well in behind the opponent’s backline.
The 94-time France international is highly versatile as he is primarily a striker who can also fill in as an attacking midfielder or play as a wide player on either wing if needed. A forward of Griezmann’s quality will be a shrewd signing for the Blues as he will bring plenty of goals and creativity to Tuchel’s frontline.
We can expect the Barca star to inject a lot of quality to Chelsea’s squad that might help them compete with Manchester City in the race to secure the Premier League title next season. At 30, Griezmann still has a few good years left in his locker to play at a high level which makes him a wise yet short-term option for Chelsea to consider before the start of the new campaign.
