Recent reports from German media outlet Sport Bild (as cited by Journalist Ronan Murphy) state that Chelsea are interested in signing Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski in the ongoing transfer window as Thomas Tuchel looks set to add to his options in the striker’s department.
‘Chelsea have spoken to agent Pini Zahavi about Robert Lewandowski, according to Sport Bild.’ – Murphy tweeted.
A report from The Sun further states that The Blues are ready to offer a fee in the region of £50 million bid for the 32-year-old Bundesliga sensation; however, Bayern are in no mood to part ways with the striker as he still has two years remaining on his current contract.
Borussia Dortmund have made it clear time and again that 20-year-old Erling Braut Haaland is not for sale this summer, but since Thomas Tuchel probably wants to add a big name striker to his side ahead of the 2021/22 season, a move for Robert Lewandowski could be on the cards.
Lewandowski’s Phenomenal Form In The Bundesliga
Robert Lewandowski joined Bayern Munich from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2014, and it’d not be an overstatement to say that he has been in sensational form ever since. Having established himself as one of the best strikers in the world in recent years, it doesn’t seem as if the Polish international is going to stop scoring goals anytime soon. With 277 goals in seven seasons for the Bundesliga outfit, he is only second to Gerd Muller in the list of Bundesliga all-time scorer’s list.
The 32-year forward managed to put up some awe-inspiring numbers on the board last season as he bagged 41 goals and 7 assists in 29 league appearances. Besides, he averaged 4.7 shots, 1.1 key passes, 0.8 dribbles, and 1.5 long balls per 90 minutes in the German top-flight. Needless to say that if he manages to keep his goal-scoring trend going at Stamford Bridge, he’d be a dream signing for the Blues.
A Great Option For Thomas Tuchel?
Timo Werner didn’t really live up to the expectations the last term as he scored just six goals in the 2020/21 Premier League season.
23-year-old Tammy Abraham seems likely to secure a move elsewhere in the coming weeks, whereas Olivier Giroud has already left for AC Milan.
Hence, it goes with saying that Thomas Tuchel needs to add a clinical number 9 to his squad ahead of the 2021/22 season. Despite being 32, Lewandowski has a lot to offer, and it’s beyond any doubt that he’ll massively improve Chelsea’s attack in multiple aspects, especially finishing – something they struggled with last season.
Moreover, a fee of £50 million sounds quite reasonable for someone of Lewandowski’s calibre. So, Tuchel should definitely try and get this deal over the line in the coming weeks. Yes, we know Lewandowski is 32, but not every transfer needs to take place with a re-sale value in mind. He would immensely improve this Chelsea side for the next 2 seasons, and that’s good enough.
