The Sun has recently reported that Brentford are ready to pay around £10m for Liverpool playmaker Harry Wilson this summer. It is understood that the Bees are showing interest in recruiting the Wales international who could part ways with the Reds during this summer transfer window (via The Sun).
Wilson’s Fruitful Loan Spell At Cardiff City
Wilson enjoyed a productive loan spell at Cardiff City last season when he caught the eye on several occasions as a key member of their attack. The 24-year-old participated in 39 matches for the Welsh club in the previous campaign, finding the back of the net on seven occasions and securing 12 assists across all fronts.
The Welsh talent managed to influence the game at both ends of the field as he averaged 0.8 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 2.0 shots, 1.7 key passes and 1.5 crosses per 90 minutes in the EFL Championship. However, he needs to work on improving his accuracy when distributing the ball after completing 73% of his attempted passes in the English second division (stats via whoscored).
It seems like Wilson is currently surplus to requirements at Anfield as he is not in contention to secure a place in Jurgen Klopp’s match-day squad. Hence, the player could be tempted with the opportunity to join Brentford where he might be guaranteed regular playing minutes in Premier League football next season.
Should The Reds Let Wilson Go This Summer?
Wilson has excellent ball control and can be a good dribbler with the ball at his feet. He has got the eye to create some decent opportunities for his teammates up top. The Wales international also packs a lot of venom when striking the ball from long range. Wilson is primarily a right-winger but can also operate as a wide player on the left flank or play as an attacking midfielder down the middle if required. He is even a specialist from dead-ball situations and can deliver some dangerous crosses into the opponent’s penalty box.
However, Wilson is yet to prove his worth in top-flight football which is why Liverpool should think about letting him go this summer. At 24, the Reds outcast is about to enter his prime, so we might get to see the best out of him in English football next season.
Wilson’s current contract at Anfield is set to expire in the summer of 2023, so Klopp will be under no pressure to cash in on him in this off-season. Still, it is only fair to the player for Liverpool to cut him loose before the start of the new campaign as he is nowhere near ready to challenge for a first-team place at the Merseyside club right now.
