In a recent report, The Sun revealed that Barcelona are set to rival Tottenham Hotspur for Napoli winger Lorenzo Insigne this summer. Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport also reported that the Naples outfit are struggling to tie the Italy international down to a new contract with his current deal set to expire next summer which could open the door for the Catalans to snap him up in this off-season.
Insigne’s Exceptional Form At The Diego Armando Maradona Stadium
Insigne went through another sensational campaign with Napoli after he put in several productive performances on the left side of their attack. The 30-year-old found the back of the net on 19 occasions and secured 11 assists in 48 matches for the Italian club last season in various competitions.
The Frattamaggiore-born sensation was a consistent performer for his current employers down the left-wing as he averaged 4.1 shots, 1.8 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A. He was even excellent when distributing possession in the opposition half based on his pass completion rate of 83.7% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
If the Naples outfit fail to tie Insigne down to a new contract, they should consider letting him go this summer or else risk losing his services on a free transfer when his current deal runs out at the end of next season. Hence, Barca are in a good position to land the Italian wing wizard for a cut-price fee this summer.
Will Insigne Be A Dream Signing For The Catalans?
Insigne is blessed with electric pace and can make some dangerous runs with the ball on the left flank. He can turn on the afterburners to get past his marker with ease and is proficient at getting a few shots in on-target. The Italian speedster can even engineer some clear-cut opportunities for others around him in the final third. He was involved in 30 goals for Napoli last season which goes to show just how productive he can be as a left-sided wide player.
Barca boss Ronald Koeman has to find a way to land some world-class talents on the cheap this summer. Hence, Insigne fits the bill perfectly as he will undeniably add plenty of quality to Barcelona’s frontline and could also be available for a reduced fee this summer.
Insigne will be a dream signing for the Catalans to pursue in this off-season as he could go on to form a lethal attacking partnership with Lionel Messi, who is close to penning a new deal to extend his stay at the Nou Camp. At 30, the Italian winger still has a few good years left in him to play at the top of his game which makes him an excellent choice for Barca to consider ahead of the new campaign.
