In a recent report, Gianluca Dimarzio mentioned that Barcelona are facing stiff competition for AS Roma left-back Leonardo Spinazzola this summer. It is understood that the Catalan outfit will have to rival Paris Saint-Germain in the race to sign the Italian defensive ace in this off-season (via Gianluca Dimarzio).
Spinazzola’s Impressive Season In Italian Football
The 28-year-old enjoyed a solid campaign with the Italian outfit as he managed to establish himself as a key member of their backline. Spinazzola featured in 39 matches for his current employers last season, netting two goals and providing eight assists in multiple competitions.
The Italian sensation has proven his worth as a valuable contributor by averaging 0.9 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 0.8 shots, 1.4 key passes and 2.2 dribbles per game in the 2020-21 Serie A campaign. He even distributed possession relatively well after making 80.6% of his attempted passes in league football last season (stats via whoscored).
Spinazzola is under contract at Stadio Olimpico until the summer of 2024, so Barca would have to make a sizable offer if they are serious about winning the race for his services during this summer transfer window. The Italian is currently playing at a high level and would add even more quality to Ronald Koeman’s defensive department at the Nou Camp.
What Will The Italian Left-Back Add To Ronald Koeman’s Side?
Spinazzola has decent pace in his locker and can make some dangerous runs with the ball down the left-wing. He has got the hunger to win the ball back for his side and can clear the danger when needed on the defensive end of the pitch. The talented playmaker is versatile enough to operate in both full-back positions or play as an advanced winger on the left flank.
The 17-time Italy international can be quite creative in the way he conducts himself in the opposition half as he can set up a few clear-cut chances for his teammates in the final third. He has a great work ethic and can even deliver some inviting crosses into the opponent’s penalty box.
At 28, Spinazzola still has plenty of good years left in him to play at the top of his game. Hence, we can expect him to add a lot of pace and creativity to Koeman’s squad in the coming seasons. The Roma star could also serve as a decent long-term successor to Jordi Alba, who is entering the last legs of his football career at the Nou Camp.
