In a recent report, La Razon stated that Atletico Madrid are willing to sell Saul Niguez to Liverpool this summer. It is believed that the Reds have identified the Spanish midfield ace as an ideal replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who decided to join Paris Saint-Germain recently (via La Razon).
Saul’s Impressive Season At The Spanish Capital
Saul experienced another successful season with the Madrid giants after he produced a run of consistent displays at the heart of Diego Simeone’s midfield. The 26-year-old participated in 41 matches for the Spanish outfit in the previous campaign, scoring two goals and grabbing one assist on all fronts.
The Spanish midfield ace did a bit of everything at the centre of the park as he averaged 1.7 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 1.0 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. He was also tidy when distributing possession from midfield based on his pass success rate of 84.8% in both those competitions (stats via whoscored).
Saul’s excellent contributions helped Atletico clinch the league title on the final day of last season, which goes to show just how well he has performed over the past 12 months. Hence, he will be a decent signing for Liverpool to pursue during this summer transfer period.
Atletico Madrid Willing To Sell Saul: Big Boost For The Reds?
Saul has a wide array of passes in his locker and can build attacks quite well in the opposition half. He is a tough-tackling midfielder who is always willing to work his socks off at the centre of the park. The Spanish talent can clear the danger when the opposition are on the offensive and can even strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range. However, he needs to work on improving his productivity in the final third if he wants to be a success story in Premier League football.
Saul’s skillset will suit Jurgen Klopp’s playing style quite well as he will add plenty of energy, creativity and dynamism to Liverpool’s midfield department. Furthermore, he could serve as a decent successor to Wijnaldum at Anfield in the coming seasons.
Saul has what it takes to form a solid midfield partnership with his fellow countryman Thiago Alcantara at the Merseyside club. More importantly, he could help the Reds reclaim the Premier League title next season. Hence, Atletico’s willingness to sell their star midfielder will be a welcome boost for Klopp and his plans to bring the Spaniard to the northwest of England this summer.
