In a recent report, Liverpool Echo revealed that Aston Villa are set to rival Everton for Burnley winger Dwight McNeil this summer. It is understood that the Villans are showing interest in recruiting the Rochdale-born talent in this off-season (via Liverpool Echo).
McNeil’s Up And Down Season In English Football
McNeil had a long and grueling season at Turf Moor and struggled to be consistent with his contributions in the attacking third. The English wide player managed to score two goals and secure five assists in 40 matches for the Clarets in the previous campaign across multiple competitions.
The 21-year-old was an influential presence at both ends of the field as he averaged 1.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.5 clearances, 0.7 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in the 2020-21 Premier League season. He also distributed possession relatively well in the opponent’s half after making 78.9% of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
McNeil is maturing into a decent winger at the Lancashire club with his current contract set to run out in the summer of 2024. Hence, the Villans would have to make a sizable offer if they are serious about acquiring his services during this summer transfer period.
Will McNeil Be A Good Choice For The Villans?
McNeil is a hard-working wide player who can make some energetic dashes down the left flank. He loves to beat his marker to get to the byline but needs to work on improving his crossing if he wants to pick up more assists in the coming seasons.
The English youngster has got a terrific left foot which he can use to strike the ball with power from close range. He can even get stuck in with some crunching tackles to help his teammates out defensively when needed. However, McNeil has to figure out a way to be more clinical in the final third if he intends to improve his offensive numbers over the next few years.
There is no denying that the Burnley winger has what it takes to offer some serious competition for Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet for a place in Smith’s first XI next season. Plus, he could serve as a decent, long-term successor to Jack Grealish at Villa Park if Smith decides to cash in on his skipper this summer. With all things considered, McNeil would be a decent choice for the West Midlands outfit to pursue ahead of the new campaign as he has the potential to become a favorite among the Villa supporters in the years to come.
