In a recent report, The Daily Mail has stated that Tottenham Hotspur are keeping a keen eye on Manchester City defender Nathan Ake this summer. It is understood that Spurs could ask Man City to include the Dutch centre-back in any deal involving Harry Kane in this off-season (via The Daily Mail).
Ake’s Underwhelming Debut Campaign At Man City
Ake has experienced an up and down season at the Etihad Stadium after struggling to make himself a regular starter in Pep Guardiola’s first team. The 26-year-old has only made 13 appearances for the Mancunian outfit this term, scoring one goal in the process across all fronts.
However, the Dutch defensive ace has done well to average 1.0 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 2.2 clearances per 90 minutes in Premier League football this season. He has been excellent when playing his way out from the back as he has completed 93.1% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
Ake’s current contract with Man City is set to expire in the summer of 2025, but his debut season for them has been far from convincing. Hence, it is only logical for the player to seek a way out of Manchester during this summer transfer period so that he can earn more playing minutes next season.
Will Ake Be The Right Fit For Spurs?
Ake has got a great leap in him that allows him to win some important aerial duels for his team. He can sense the danger quickly to make some crucial interceptions for his side. The Dutch defender can even clear the danger when his teammates are exposed at the back. However, the form of John Stones and Ruben Dias has kept him out of Pep Guardiola’s first XI in the recently concluded Premier League season.
At 26, Ake is about to enter his prime and could add some much-needed quality to Tottenham’s backline that has shipped in some poor goals in both domestic and European football over the past ten months. The 19-time Netherlands international might enjoy securing regular first-team football at the English capital, so Spurs chairman Daniel Levy should think about getting a deal done for him this summer.
Ake has what it takes to compete with Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez for a starting spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With all things considered, the ex-Bournemouth central defender will be a decent fit for Spurs as long as they plan to play him regularly in the coming seasons.
