Portugal locked horns with Germany earlier this evening, hoping to pick up a win in the second game of their UEFA Euro 2020 campaign. Germany started the game on the front foot but it was the visitors that took the lead via Cristiano Ronaldo around the 15-minute-mark. However, Germany’s attacks thereafter turned out to be devastating for Portugal’s defence as it led to two own goals in the first half itself. Second-half goals from Kai Havertz and Gosens extended their advantage but a 67th-minute goal from Diogo Jota meant that the hosts ran out 4-2 winners in the end.
Let’s take a look at how each Portugal player fared during the clash against Germany.
Portugal Players Rated In Loss Vs Germany
Rui Patricio 4
The Wolves shot-stopper couldn’t have done much about the goals he conceded as he was mostly let down by his defence. However, his ball distribution was very poor tonight.
Nelson Semedo 2
Semedo completely failed to stop Gosens down the right flank as the German ran riot over the course of the game. He left him unmarked in the box which directly led to three goals.
Ruben Dias 5
Although he conceded an own goal there’s not much he could have done about it. He was under immense pressure for the majority of the game as his teammates struggled to keep hold of the ball in the advanced areas. Nonetheless, it was a shambolic display from the Manchester City man.
Pepe 5
The Porto centre-back could have done a better job in marking the German players inside the box. He failed to communicate properly with Ruben Dias and ended up conceding four goals over the course of the game.
Raphael Guerreiro 3
The Dortmund star scored an own goal which could have been completely avoided as he had the time and space for the clearance. He had difficulty keeping up with the opposition frontmen, especially during the early stages of the match.
William Carvalho 4
It was a very poor first half from the Real Betis man. He kept giving the ball away throughout the first forty-five minutes and was eventually replaced by Rafa Silva in the 58th minute.
Danilo Pereira 5
The Paris Saint-Germain star was far too slow for the opposition tonight as he was completely ineffective against the counter-attacks. Besides, at times, he couldn’t even make himself available to receive a simple pass. In a nutshell, he didn’t offer anything significant at the centre of the park.
Diogo Jota 8
The Liverpool striker set up the opening goal for Cristiano Ronaldo and scored one later from a set-piece situation. He worked very hard throughout the ninety minutes and could have done more damage to the German defence if he got a few more chances.
Bruno Fernandes 5
The Manchester United playmaker seemed to lack creativity in the opposition half as he failed to create any sort of goal-scoring chance for the frontmen.
Bernardo Silva 6
Played a crucial role in setting up Portugal’s opening goal but failed to offer anything else as the game went on.
Cristiano Ronaldo 8
The Juventus striker had to work very hard to even get a touch of the ball tonight but he still managed to score a goal and bag an assist.
