In a recent report, El Gol Digital has claimed that Real Madrid are eyeing a move for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez this summer. It is believed that Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti is hoping to bring the Uruguay international to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in this off-season (via El Gol Digital).
Gimenez’s Outstanding Form At The Spanish Capital
Gimenez experienced a brilliant campaign at the Wanda Metropolitano as he helped Diego Simeone’s side clinch the La Liga title last month. The 26-year-old was involved in 26 matches for the Spanish outfit in the previous campaign in various competitions.
The Toledo-born sensation was once again a dominant presence at the heart of Simeone’s defence as he averaged 1.0 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 3.0 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League last season. He even distributed possession well after completing 88% of his attempted passes in both those competitions (stats via whoscored).
Gimenez has still got over two years remaining on his Atletico Madrid contract, so Los Blancos will have to make a big offer if they are to stand a chance of convincing their rivals to part ways with their prized asset during this summer transfer window.
What Will Gimenez Add To Carlo Ancelotti’s Team?
Standing at 1.85, Gimenez is a dominant presence inside his penalty box and can win his fair share of 50-50 aerial duels against the opposition. He is a decent tackler of the ball and can make some crucial interceptions for his side. The Toledo-born talent can even put his body on the line to block a few goal-bound shot attempts inside his half.
The 63-time Uruguay international can also make himself big and clear the danger when the opposition are on the front foot. He is also proficient at playing his way out from the back, so he will fit into Ancelotti’s playing style quite well in the coming seasons.
At 26, Gimenez is enjoying the prime years of his career. Hence, we can expect him to make an immediate impact at the Bernabeu if Los Blancos manage to recruit him this summer. He will be an upgrade over Nacho and Eder Militao at the Madrid club. Plus, he could serve as an ideal replacement for Sergio Ramos, who decided to leave Real Madrid recently.
With all things considered, Gimenez will add plenty of quality to Ancelotti’s defensive department and could even help the Madrid giants challenge in both domestic and European football next season.
