According to Record, Sergio Oliveira is keen on a Tottenham switch. The FC Porto midfielder is tipped to leave the club in the summer, but his proposed move to Fiorentina collapsed after the departure of Gennaro Gattuso. However, it has opened up an avenue for Premier League clubs to secure his services, with Oliveira hoping for Tottenham, in particular, to make a move.
Sergio Oliveira’s Successful Season With Porto
Sergio Oliveira is one of the most experienced players in the FC Porto squad, having joined the club six years ago. However, he rose to prominence due to his performances in the recently concluded 2020/21 campaign.
An attacking midfielder by trade, Oliveira ended the Liga NOS campaign with 13 goals and six assists. His contributions in the final third played a key role in helping FC Porto pip arch-rivals SL Benfica, in the race for the Champions League places.
Oliveira made an impact in the UEFA Champions League as well, scoring five goals in eight matches. He scored twice in the Round of 16 tie against Juventus, knocking the Old Lady out of the competition.
In addition to his productivity, Oliveira has also impressed the onlookers with his chance creation in the final third. The Portuguese international is particularly good at set-pieces while also having a lethal right foot. It makes him a well-rounded playmaker, who is representing Portugal in the ongoing Euro 2020.
Is Oliveira A Good Fit For Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur are in for a major rebuild once they find the successor of Jose Mourinho. The midfield department has emerged to be one of their key weaknesses, with Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks finding it difficult to find a place in the first team. Not to mention, the club has lacked creative midfielders with Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso failing to perform.
This is where Sergio Oliveira comes into the fray due to his creative prowess. He can prove to be an ideal partner for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg adding the variety in the Tottenham midfield with chance creation.
Moreover, the 29-year-old has a knack for scoring goals that can help somewhat lift the scoring burden off other attackers, especially as Tottenham prepare for life without Harry Kane. Oliveira might also be an ideal replacement for Alli, who faces an uncertain future at the club.
The Portuguese international isn’t expected to cost a fortune either. His current contract expires in 2025, but given Porto’s financial turmoil, they might be forced to cash in on somewhere around the €20-€25m mark – making him a smart investment for the Lilywhites.
