In a recent report, The Athletic has mentioned that Newcastle United speedster Miguel Almiron is expected to stay at St. James’ Park beyond this summer. It is believed that the Paraguayan wide player’s recent form could earn him a place in the Magpies squad for the upcoming Premier League campaign (via The Athletic).
Almiron’s Difficult Campaign In English Football
Almiron experienced a tough and gruelling campaign with the Tyneside outfit last season but still managed to put in some dazzling displays as a key member of Steve Bruce’s attack. The South American sensation registered five goals and three assists in 39 matches for the Magpies in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The 27-year-old worked hard to influence the game at both ends of the field after he averaged 1.4 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.5 clearances, 1.0 shots, 0.9 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game in Premier League football. He has also taken care of the ball when distributing it in the opposition half based on his pass success rate of 82% in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Almiron’s current contract at St. James’ Park will end in the summer of 2024, so Newcastle has no immediate need to cash in on him. Bruce should consider giving him another season to prove his worth and become a prolific goal-scorer in the Premier League.
Almiron Expected To Stay Beyond This Summer: Good Move For Both Parties?
Almiron is a quick and agile wide player who tends to work his socks off covering a lot of ground in both halves. He can press the opposition well high up the field and can make some driving runs with the ball towards the byline. The Paraguay international can whip in a few inviting crosses into the opponent’s penalty box and packs a lot of power with his shot attempts. However, he needs to find a way to be more consistent with his offensive numbers if he wants to prove himself at the highest level.
Almiron will benefit a lot from staying at Newcastle as he will be guaranteed regular playing minutes but there are some question marks over whether he can provide enough firepower for the Magpies to succeed in the coming seasons.
Even then, his excellent work rate and dribbling ability make him a valuable member of Bruce’s match-day squad. Hence, the Tyneside giants should think about retaining Almiron’s services beyond this summer as it will be a good move for both the player and the club. At 27, the Paraguayan still has enough time to gain the trust of his manager by performing at a high-level week in week out in the English top-flight next season.
