In a recent report, SBI Soccer has stated that Newcastle United are leading the chase for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers this summer. It is believed that the Magpies have moved ahead of Bournemouth in the race to recruit the Southend-born centre-back during this summer transfer window (via SBI Soccer).
Carter-Vickers’ Impressive Loan Spell At Bournemouth
The 23-year-old recently enjoyed a fruitful loan spell with the Cherries as he put in some solid displays at the centre of their defence. Carter-Vickers participated in 26 matches for Jonathan Woodgate’s side in the previous campaign, netting one goal and providing one assist in all competitions.
The United States international gave a good account of himself when defending inside his half by averaging 1.0 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 3.6 clearances per game in the EFL Championship last season. He even interchanged possession with his teammates quite well from the back after completing 84% of his attempted passes in the English second division (stats via whoscored).
At 23, Carter-Vickers is about to enter the prime stage of his playing career, so the Magpies can expect to make the most of his talents if they can devise a way to bring him on board in this off-season. His no-nonsense style of defending will suit Steve Bruce’s team quite well and could help them challenge for a top-half finish in the next Premier League campaign.
Will Carter-Vickers Be The Right Choice For The Magpies?
Carter-Vickers has proven himself to be a capable defender in the Championship as he can make some crunching tackles to earn possession back for his side. He is also not shy of putting his foot through the ball to clear his lines when the opposition are on the offensive.
The United Stated defensive ace is a decent passer of the ball as well, so he could give Bruce the option to build attacks from the back rather than rely on long balls to open up the opponent’s defence up top. However, he is yet to prove his worth at the highest level, so there are some concerns over whether he would be able to perform at a level good enough to get a regular starting place at St. James’ Park.
Either way, the Magpies should consider moving in for Carter-Vickers this summer as he will enhance the depth of their match-day squad. Plus, he will also offer some serious competition for Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar and Ciaran Clark for a place in Bruce’s first XI. All in all, Carter-Vickers will be a good choice for Newcastle as long as they plan to use him as a squad player over the next few seasons.
