Voetbalkrant.com has recently reported that Newcastle United are facing stiff competition for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers this summer. It is believed that the Magpies will have to battle it out with Anderlecht and Club Brugge in pursuit of the Spurs centre-half during this summer transfer window (via Voetbalkrant.com).
Carter-Vickers’ Decent Loan Spell At The Vitality Stadium
Carter-Vickers has enjoyed a solid loan spell at Bournemouth over the past ten months and managed to put in some commanding displays at the heart of Jonathan Woodgate’s defence. The United States international made 26 appearances for the Cherries, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the process across all fronts.
The 23-year-old proved his worth on the defensive end of the field by averaging 1.0 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 3.6 clearances per 90 minutes in the EFL Championship this season. Carter-Vickers has even distributed the ball relatively well out from the back after completing 84% of his attempted passes in the English second tier (stats via whoscored).
With the Southend-born defensive ace’s contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium set to run out at the end of this month, Newcastle will have a good chance to land him on a free transfer if they can convince him to join Steve Bruce’s revolution at Tyneside.
Is Carter-Vickers Worth The Fight?
Carter-Vickers has transformed himself into a decent defensive presence inside his half as he can time his tackles well to pull off some important interceptions for his team. He has good defensive awareness and can clear the danger when left exposed at the back.
However, the eight-time United States international is yet to prove himself at the highest level, so Newcastle would be taking a risk if they decide to offer him a contract this summer. Even then, Carter-Vickers could be a clever addition to their squad as long as the player doesn’t get overwhelmed when thrown into the deep end of Premier League football.
The United States talent has shown some signs of maturity this season and could become a good squad player under the watchful eyes of Bruce at St. James’ Park. At 23, Carter-Vickers will only get better with each season, so the Magpies can expect to see him play his best football in the coming seasons.
With all things considered, Carter-Vickers will be well-worth the fight as he will be available on a free transfer in this off-season. The Tottenham centre-back has a lot of room for improvement, but the future could still be bright for him in English football if he gets a chance to shine for an experienced manager like Bruce at Tyneside.
