In a recent interview with Empire of the Kop, Belgian journalist Sven Claes confirmed Manchester United’s interest in Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans.
“It will be a very difficult decision for Tielemans. The tears speak for themselves after receiving the POTY award two weeks ago.” – Claes revealed.
“When he’ll play a good Euros I expect him to be leaving yes. He’s ready for a new challenge/next step – and I also believe that.”
“A lot of clubs like Man U and a Spanish top team already want him.”
He further added that Leicester would demand a fee in the region of 55 million Euros; however, the valuation might increase if the player enjoys a successful Euro campaign with Belgium.
Tielemans’ Amazing Season At The King Power Stadium
Leicester City beat Chelsea 1-0 to lift the FA Cup for the first time in their history – thanks to Youri Tielemans’ wondrous strike. The 24-year-old enjoyed a brilliant second season for the Foxes as he took part in all of their 38 league games, coming off the bench on just one occasion.
Tielemans managed to put up some awe-inspiring numbers on the board this term – averaging 2.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, and 0.2 blocks per 90 minutes in the Premier League (calculated over 38 appearances). Moreover, with 3 long balls played per game with an overall pass accuracy of 81.7%, he has been one of the best distributors of his side this season. These numbers underline his capabilities of holding on to the ball when needed and how he can win the ball back or pick up the right man on the other side of the pitch to start counter-attacks effortlessly – the main element of Solskjaer’s style.
Even though Tielemans is naturally suited to the central midfield role, his versatility allows him to operate across the entire midfield region – be it as an attacking or a defensive midfielder. Moreover, with the wide array of technical abilities the 24-year-old possesses, he’d be a great addition to any top European side at this moment.
Why Solskjaer Should Sign Him
Nemanja Matic will turn 33 in August, whereas Paul Pogba’s future at the club still seems uncertain as he hasn’t penned down a new contract yet. Tielemans can act as a direct replacement for the Frenchman in the long term but could initially be asked to fill in the defensive midfield position.
The Belgian’s arrival at Old Trafford will undoubtedly strengthen Solskjaer’s midfield department, and he could potentially be the final piece of the puzzle the Norwegian tactician needs to turn Manchester United into serious title contenders. Furthermore, at 24, Tielemans will only get better with each passing game.
Hence, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should definitely try and get the deal over the line in the coming months.
