According to Calciomercato, Leeds United are plotting a move for Tommaso Pobega. The Spezia starlet is set to return to Milan following his year-long loan spell. Marcelo Bielsa is reportedly interested in the midfielder, although they are to set to face stiff competition from Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt. Either way, Pobega’s future will be decided by his parent club AC Milan.
Who Is Tommaso Pobega?
Tommaso Pobega has been a part of the AC Milan youth setup since 2013. During his ongoing eight-year spell at the club, the midfielder has spent various loan spells, in Ternana, Pordenone and most recently, Spezia.
Pobega made his top-flight breakthrough with Spezia this past season. He featured in 20 league matches, becoming a useful part of the club’s midfield unit, especially during the second half of the campaign.
The 21-year-old has impressed the onlookers with his ability to drive forward with the ball. He can offer the creativity in the final third as well find himself in scoring positions.
Defensively, Pobega’s imposing 1.88m frame makes him an intimidating presence in the middle of the park. He has the tackling prowess to protect the backline but is also versatile enough to play in a more attacking role. The youngster was notably involved in nine goals this past season, helping Spezia survive the wrath of relegation.
Is Pobega An Ideal Option For Leeds United?
Following a successful return to the Premier League, Leeds United will once again enter the market for reinforcements as they look to add more quality to the team.
One of Marcelo Bielsa’s biggest issue is that the midfield department lacks adequate depth. There is no viable alternative for Kalvin Phillips, with Bielsa often being forced to utilise Pascal Struijk or Robin Koch as a backup.
This is where Tommaso Pobega could be an ideal signing for Leeds United. Although a central midfielder by trade, the Italian can effortlessly play in the defensive midfield role, providing cover for Phillips.
Naturally, though, Pobega would be an ideal alternative for Mateusz Klich and Stuart Dallas, especially if Bielsa opts to utilise Dallas in the wingback positions. The player’s attacking prowess and ability to drive forward also go in hand in hand with the Argentine’s tactical philosophy at Elland Road.
Moreover, Pobega isn’t expected to cost a fortune either and at the age of 21, he could indeed be a smart long-term investment for the Whites this summer.
