Germany are hoping to end their UEFA Euro 2020 group stage campaign on a positive note as they take on Hungary on Wednesday. The 2014 World Cup champions have an excellent chance of securing top spot in Group F, should they secure all three points and France fail to win their own game against Portugal. They are also lucky not to be playing in Budapest, as this game will be hosted at the Allianz Arena – giving Germans the advantage heading into this clash.
Predicted Germany Lineup Vs Hungary
Defence
Germany are facing a scare heading into this game as key defender Mats Hummels did not train with the team due to a slight niggle. We do, however, expect the Dortmund centre-back to return to full fitness on Wednesday, starting the game at the heart of Germany’s three-man backline.
Hummels will be partnered by Matthias Ginter and Antonio Rudiger as usual on either side of the defence. Should the veteran miss out, however, Niklas Sule appears to be the most likely replacement, though Joachim Loew also has the option of starting Leeds United star Robin Koch.
Ginter, on the other hand, is irreplaceable, especially with right-back Lukas Klostermann being ruled out of the tournament due to injury. It will be interesting to see whether Loew opts to rest of any of his defensive stars, though.
Elsewhere, Manuel Neuer should start in goal as usual. The captain is due a good performance here after struggling in the first couple of matches.
Midfield
Loew was given a major boost heading into this clash, as Leon Goretzka is now fully fit. He should walk right back into the starting eleven, partnering Toni Kroos in central midfield. His presence alongside the Real Madrid midfielder should offer much more stability to the Germans.
Speaking of midfielders, Joshua Kimmich may once again have to operate out on the right following the injury of Klostermann. The Bayern Munich superstar played well against Portugal and will be hoping for a similar performance this time out.
Robin Gosens, too, remains a guaranteed starter after starring in the win over Portugal. He notably bagged two goals and one assist, making him the man worth keeping an eye on, in this fixture.
Attack
While Goretzka’s return will certainly be a boon for Germany, it appears Thomas Muller has been ruled out for the Hungary game due to injury. Reports suggest that he may even miss out on the R16 clash, serving a major blow for Loew.
Fortunately, the return of Goretzka in central midfield should allow Ilkay Gundogan to play further forward, alongside Chelsea’s Kai Havertz in the two attacking midfield positions. They will look to operate just behind Serge Gnabry, making useful runs into the box as they did against Portugal.
