In a recent report, Il Romanista has stated that Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz could be available for €30m amid recent interest from AS Roma. It is believed that the Villans have put a €30m price tag on the Brazilian midfielder which could drive Roma away from signing the player this summer (via Il Romanista).
Luiz’s Campaign Of Mixed Emotions At Villa Park
The 23-year-old experienced an up and down season with the West Midlands club as he struggled to find consistency with his performances at the centre of the park. Luiz featured in 34 matches for Dean Smith’s side in the previous campaign, picking up three assists in all competitions.
However, the Rio de Janeiro-born midfield ace deserves credit for protecting his backline from midfield based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.2 clearances per game in the Premier League. He even distributed the ball relatively well after making 85.7% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Luiz is currently under contract at Villa Park until the summer of 2023, so Smith has no reason to sell him for anything less than €30m during this summer transfer period. At 23, the Brazilian sensation’s best years are ahead of him which is why the Villans should play hardball with regards to his transfer fee in this off-season.
Should The Villans Let Luiz Go This Summer?
Luiz is a hard-working midfielder who can get stuck in with a few tackles to secure the ball back for his team. He can disrupt the opposition’s flow in the game at the centre of the park and is usually a tidy passer of the ball. The Brazilian playmaker can chip in by picking up a few important assists but need to work on improving his finishing so that he can add some goals to his game next season. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box to box midfielder if required.
Luiz doesn’t take too many chances with his clearances and can pack a lot of venom with his shot attempts. He has what it takes to find some consistency in the Premier League next season, so the Villans should consider retaining his services beyond this summer.
Smith needs to keep hold of his best young players like Luiz if he wants a strong squad capable of challenging across all fronts in the upcoming campaign. Hence, the West Midlands club should not let the Brazilian workhorse leave during this summer transfer period as his value will only increase if he can make some improvements to his game during pre-season.
