According to SportBild, Tottenham Hotspur have approached Ralf Rangnick as they continue their search for Jose Mourinho’s replacement. The former Schalke and Hoffenheim manager has emerged as one of the potential candidates, with Daniel Levy unlikely to retain Ryan Mason at the helm next season. Rangnick has already been linked with multiple clubs this summer, but a move to Tottenham could be a possibility.
Ralf Rangnick’s Success In Germany
Ralf Rangnick is widely considered as one of the most experienced and successful German footballing heads, having started his coaching career way back in 1996 with Regionalliga outfit SSV Reutlingen.
He made his Bundesliga breakthrough at VfB Stuttgart, taking charge of the Swabian outfit for 86 matches before joining Hannover in 2001. His most important spell, however, came at TSG Hoffenheim – a club he joined in 2006.
Hoffenheim were still on the fringes of the German lower division back then. But under Rangnick, they became an absolute force in the Bundesliga, notably finishing seventh in the 2008/09 campaign. He eventually left the club in 2011, in favour of a second spell at Schalke. In Gelsenkirchen, Rangnick won his first major title, helping the Royal Blues secure the DFB Pokal in the 2010/11 campaign.
In recent years, however, the German was hugely involved with the Red Bull franchise and had a key role to play in RB Leipzig’s rise to prominence. He was even the global sports director of the whole franchise before leaving his post last summer.
Is Rangnick A Good Option For Tottenham?
Following a turbulent 18 months following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino and a host of difficult sporting and financial challenges, Tottenham Hotspur are in desperate need of someone who has a lot of experience in running a football club.
Rangnick, in that regard, could be an ideal candidate as he has gathered a lot of experience during his time in Germany. He was, as mentioned earlier, a key figure in Leipzig’s growth as well as their marketing strategy throughout the rest of the world, with the likes of NY Red Bulls, Red Bull Salzburg and indeed, RB Leipzig thriving in their respective leagues.
Such experience and knowledge, coupled with a tactical brain could be useful for Tottenham as they look to restore their lost glory following two turbulent seasons.
One issue Daniel Levy might face with the arrival of Rangnick is the 62-year-old’s attitude and his compulsion to run things his own way. It could bring out potential disagreements, which doesn’t bode well for the club at all. But if the two parties can avoid such interactions, Rangnick certainly has the qualities to bring Spurs back to life with his tactical strategy, marketing knowledge and the ability to bring the best out of players – making him an ideal target for Levy.
