Real Madrid entertained Villarreal at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano earlier this evening as they looked to end their La Liga campaign with a win at home. Los Blancos made a poor start to the game and conceded the opening goal in the 20th minute when Yeremi Pino found the back of the net with a right-footed strike. The Yellow Submarine held on to their narrow advantage as the Madrid giants went into the half-time break one goal down on the scoreline.
Zinedine Zidane’s men kept pushing in search of an equalizer and finally managed to score the leveller in the 87th minute courtesy of Karim Benzema’s goal. Luka Modric completed the turnaround when he netted a dramatic injury-time goal which gave the Madrid outfit a narrow 2-1 victory at the Spanish capital. However, the win was bittersweet for Zidane’s players as Atletico Madrid managed to collect all three points versus Real Valladolid and ended up being crowned as the new champions of Spain.
Let’s take a look at how each Real Madrid player performed during the clash against Villarreal.
GK: Thibaut Courtois – 6/10
The Belgian keeper had to make just one save during the game but will be disappointed for conceding a goal in the first half which ruined his chances of a clean sheet.
RB: Alvaro Odriozola – 6/10
The Spanish full-back was mostly untroubled at the back and managed to create one key chance during the game. He got replaced in the second half.
CB: Eder Militao – 6.5/10
He got stuck in with a couple of tackles and deserves credit for clearing the danger when needed.
CB: Raphael Varane – 6.5/10
The French defensive ace made a couple of important blocks and did enough to restrict Villarreal from scoring more than once this evening.
LB: Miguel Gutiérrez – 6/10
He kept things solid at the back but struggled to influence the game in the attacking third. Gutierrez got substituted in the 67th minute.
CM: Federico Valverde – 7/10
The Uruguayan midfielder completed multiple dribbles during the game and was a real handful for the opposition to cope with this evening.
CM: Casemiro – 7/10
The Brazilian talent controlled the game well from midfield and deserves credit for reading the danger quickly and earning possession back for his side quite a few times throughout his time on the field.
CM: Luka Modric – 8/10
The Croatia international turned back the years and bossed the game in the opposition half. He caused all kinds of problems for the opposition and ended up netting the winning goal in injury time.
RW: Marco Asensio – 6/10
The Spanish sensation offered very little in the final third and got subbed out early in the second half.
ST: Karim Benzema – 8/10
The Frenchman scored the all-important equalizer but could have added a few more to his goal-tally with all the chances he got. He was unfortunate to have seen a goal ruled out by VAR.
LW: Vinicus Junior – 6/10
He faded in and out of the game and struggled to give a good account of himself down the left flank.
Substitutes:
RW: Rodrygo – 7/10
Rodrygo produced a nice cameo off the bench and has got an assist to show for his efforts.
LW: Isco – 6/10
The Spaniard struggled to make an impact in the attacking end of the field.
LB: Marcelo – 6/10
He kept things solid defensively but struggled to create any chances in the Villarreal half.
ST: Mariano – 6/10
Mariano did not get a sniff at goal.
CB: Nacho – 6/10
The Spaniard performed well enough to keep the opposition at bay during his time on the pitch.
