According to Foot Mercato (as reported by the Daily Record), Rangers are assessing the option of roping in Nimes midfielder Zinedine Ferhat.
The Gers are the champions of Scotland after a decade of despair. They have dethroned Celtic to conquer the coveted crown and are gearing up for the upcoming campaign with Champions League football set to return at Ibrox.
“There are other areas of the team and squad where we’re actively working towards strengthening and come the Champions League qualifiers, whether it’s the third round or the fourth, we’ll have a team and a squad ready to go and give it our best shot.”
Said Steven Gerrard who is keen on bolstering the current set-up with quality inclusions.
Ferhat, 28, is an Algeria international known for his versatility in the middle of the park. However, he has mostly been utilized down the wide since joining the Ligue 1 side on a Bosman move (from Le Havre) a couple of summers ago. Nimes were fortunate enough to avoid relegation last season, but they might not script an escape this term unless the other results favour the French minnows.
Irrespective of Nimes’ future, Ferhat is tipped to ply his trade elsewhere amid interest from Sassuolo and Rangers. He scored 6 and registered 10 assists so far in 32 league outings. The number of chances created by the Algerian earned plaudits from the scouts who kept close tabs on his progress all throughout the campaign.
Why Rangers Should Wrap Up Ferhat
Despite having an array of midfield options in their ranks, the Bears have struggled to obtain the creative spark on quite a few occasions. Champions League is a different ball game and the quality would be much higher than what they have witnessed so far in the Europa League. They already have ample attacking names on the flanks, but a player of Ferhat’s calibre would bring in more composure from behind the frontline.
Veteran Scott Arfield is no more the same player he used to be a few months ago and it’s time for Gerrard to find a long-term successor of the versatile Canadian. Joe Aribo offers flexibility to some extent, however, the Nigerian is most suited for a specific midfield role that can not be compromised in the current system. Rangers, therefore, must explore the opportunity of roping in Zinedine Ferhat and inject more firepower and finesse in and around the attacking third.
