In a recent segment of ESPN FC, former Scotland player Steve Nicol urged Liverpool to land Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma this summer. Nicol said,
“Go and sign Bissouma from Brighton. That’s who I would sign if I were Klopp.”
Bissouma’s Outstanding Form At The American Express Community Stadium This Season
Bissouma enjoyed an exceptional season with the Seagulls recently as he produced a series of commanding displays at the centre of Graham Potter’s midfield. The 18-time Mali international has featured in 39 matches for the Reds this term, scoring two goals and picking up nine yellow cards in the process across all fronts.
The 24-year-old has proven his worth as an excellent two-way player for Brighton by averaging 2.9 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, 1.8 clearances, 1.2 shots and 1.5 dribbles per game in the recently concluded Premier League campaign. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball from midfield, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 87.4% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
The Mali midfielder’s current contract at the Amex is set to expire in the summer of 2023, so Liverpool will have to make a big money offer if they want to bring him to the northwest of England during the summer transfer window.
Should Jurgen Klopp Get Bissouma On Board This Summer?
Bissouma is a moderately-paced midfielder who can read the danger quickly to earn possession back for his team. He can also position himself well to make a clearance when his teammates are exposed at the back.
The Mali international can even make some energetic runs in the opposition half and is proficient at striking the ball purely and with a lot of power. He has matured into a good passer of the ball, so he has all the skillset required to make a smooth transition to Klopp’s style of play at Anfield.
Bissouma is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also operate in a box-to-box role if needed. Hence, he could go on to form a dominant midfield partnership with Fabinho at Merseyside if Liverpool can acquire his services in this off-season.
At 24, Bissouma is about to enter the peak years of his playing career, so the Reds should consider listening to Nicol’s advice by getting the Brighton midfield ace on board during this summer transfer period.
