In a recent report, The Daily Mail has mentioned that Manchester City are ready to let Raheem Sterling leave during this summer transfer window. It is understood that the Mancunian giants are hoping to freshen up their options for next season and could allow the English wing wizard to leave, with Arsenal showing interest in landing him this summer (via The Daily Mail).
Sterling’s Solid Season In English Football
Sterling has enjoyed another impressive season at the Etihad Stadium even though he failed to hit the heights of his performances from the 2019-20 Premier League campaign. The English wide player has scored 14 goals and secured 12 assists in 49 matches for Man City this term across all competitions.
The Kingston-born talent has also been consistent with his offensive contributions as he is averaging 2.3 shots, 1.3 key passes and 2.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season. He has even been careful when distributing possession in the opposition half based on his pass completion rate of 86.2% in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
The 26-year-old has struggled to maintain his high standards in Europe and was quite underwhelming in the narrow 1-0 UEFA Champions League final loss at the hands of Chelsea recently. Hence, Man City have every reason to consider his long-term future at the Etihad this summer.
Is Guardiola Making The Right Call With Regards To Sterling?
Sterling is one of the quickest players in Premier League football and can turn on the afterburners to get to the byline and wreak havoc in the final third. He usually puts in a tireless shift out on the wide areas and can score or assist his fair share of goals from the flanks.
The England international can get into some dangerous areas in the attacking end and has got the skillset to cause all kinds of problems for the opposition centre-backs. However, he can sometimes go missing in certain big games which has not helped his cause in Manchester.
Hence, it seems like Pep Guardiola is making the right call by cashing in on Sterling so that he can fund a move for a marque acquisition this summer. Man City have to find a way to freshen up their squad before the start of the new campaign so that they can compete for the UEFA Champions League trophy once again in the coming seasons. Cashing in on Sterling could boost the Mancunian outfit’s finances and help them land someone like Harry Kane or Kylian Mbappe this summer.
