Manchester City entertained Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium earlier today as they looked to pick up a victory at home which would have been enough for them to win the Premier League title. The Mancunian outfit made a slow start to the game but recovered well and took the lead in the 44th minute courtesy of Raheem Sterling’s goal. Sergio Aguero missed a penalty soon after which meant that Man City went into the half-time break one goal to the good.
Hakim Ziyech equalized for the visitors in the 63rd minute with a good finish to set up a grand finale to the match. There was even more drama late in the game as Chelsea scored an injury-time winner courtesy of Marcos Alonso’s scuffed finish. The contest ended with Man City suffering a shock 2-1 home loss at the hands of Thomas Tuchel’s men.
Let’s take a look at how each Man City player fared during the match against the Blues.
GK: Ederson – 6/10
The Brazilian keeper made a couple of solid saves but will be bitterly disappointed after shipping in two goals in the second half.
CB: Ruben Dias – 6/10
The Portuguese centre-back got stuck in with some tackles and made one good chance in the opponent’s half. However, he could have done better to prevent Marcos Alonso’s late winner.
CB: Aymeric Laporte – 6.5/10
Laporte maintained a good shape at the back and managed to keep the Chelsea attackers frustrated in the first half. He was also excellent when passing the ball out from the back.
CB: Nathan Ake – 6.5/10
Ake cleared his lines when needed and earned the ball back a couple of times for his side. However, he had a difficult second half.
CDM: Rodri – 5.5/10
The Spaniard had a tough game in midfield and could have offered a little bit more on the defensive end of the field. However, he created two good chances for others around him in the final third.
RM: Joao Cancelo – 7/10
Cancelo hardly put a foot wrong in the game when defending inside his half. He also had a few bright moments in the Chelsea half.
CM: Ferran Torres – 6/10
The Spanish sensation managed to create a couple of meaningful openings for his teammates but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
CM: Raheem Sterling – 7/10
Sterling scored his team’s only goal today just before the half-time break. However, all of his good work went for nothing as Man City still ended up losing the game.
CM: Benjamin Mendy – 6.5/10
Mendy engineered some decent chances for his teammates to score but was far from convincing at the back.
ST: Gabriel Jesus – 6/10
The Brazilian striker had a few shots at goal but was not clinical enough in the attacking end of the pitch.
ST: Sergio Aguero – 6.5/10
The Argentine frontman picked up an assist for setting up Sterling’s goal. However, he missed a penalty soon far, much to the disappointment of Pep Guardiola.
Substitutes:
CAM: Phil Foden – 6/10
Foden hardly got a sniff at goal.
CM: Ilkay Gundogan – 6/10
Gundogan had a couple of shots but was not wearing his shooting boots.
LB: Oleksandr Zinchenko – 6/10
He brought some energy onto the field.
