In a recent report, FCInterNews has stated that Liverpool are set to rival Barcelona for Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij. However, it is understood that the Dutch centre-back is happy with life at San Siro which could make it difficult for the Reds if they decide to move in for him in the summer (via FCInterNews).
De Vrij’s Solid Season In Italian Football
De Vrij has been a consistent feature at the heart of Antonio Conte’s defence and played a crucial role in Inter’s Serie A title triumph this season. The 29-year-old has featured in 41 matches for the Italian giants this term, netting one goal in the process on all fronts.
The Dutch sensation has proven his worth as a reliable defender by averaging 0.9 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 2.9 clearances per game in this Serie A campaign. He has been exceptional when distributing possession out from the back after making 93.7% of his attempted passes in the Italian top-flight (stats via whoscored).
De Vrij is under contract at San Siro until the summer of 2023, so Inter will be under no immediate pressure to cash in on him at the end of this campaign. However, if a club of Liverpool’s size come in for him this summer, it would be difficult for the player to turn down such a move. Having said that, the Reds could struggle to attract top talents like de Vrij as they are likely to not have the lure of UEFA Champions League football next season.
What Will The Dutch Defensive Ace Add To Jurgen Klopp’s Side?
De Vrij is a great tackler of the ball that helps him pull off some crucial interceptions for his team. He is often quick to sense the danger and can clear his lines when in danger of being exposed at the back. Standing at 1.89m, the 43-time Netherlands international can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition in the air and win some important 50-50 duels for his side.
At 29, de Vrij is currently playing at his peak and would be a good short-term addition to Liverpool’s squad. He would add more bite and steel to Jurgen Klopp’s defence and could propel the Reds to challenge for the Premier League title once again next season.
Moreover, de Vrij could form a commanding centre-back partnership with his international compatriot, Virgil Van Dijk at Anfield in the coming seasons. Hence, Klopp should consider orchestrating a move to try and lure him to Merseyside during the summer transfer period.
