According to SportBild, as cited by Sport Witness, Leeds United are eyeing a swoop for Matheus Cunha. The Premier League newcomers were keen on the services of the Hertha Berlin forward in January, but it appears their interest has grown even more concrete, with the player ready to leave the Olympiastadion in the summer.
Matheus Cunha: Player Profile
Formerly of RB Leipzig, Matheus Cunha joined Hertha Berlin at the start of 2020, for a fee of almost €20 million. He was brought in as a part of the club’s major financial influx, as the capital club also signed Lucas Tousart, Krzysztof Piatek and Santiago Ascacibar in the same window.
Cunha has certainly been the more successful transfer, making an impact during the second half of last season with five goals. He mesmerised the onlookers with his skill on the ball, coupled with his ability from range.
The Brazilian, as a result, has been the club’s joint top-scorer along with Piatek and Jhon Cordoba. He has also chipped in with six assists, thus helping Hertha remain slightly ahead of fellow relegation candidates this season.
It also indicated Cunha’s ability to not only score goals but also create chances for his team. He is quite useful from set-pieces while the attacker is versatile as well, having featured in a wide role as well as a central attacking role during his time at Hertha.
Is He A Good Option For Leeds United?
Leeds United will certainly require attacking reinforcements this summer, as they prepare for life without the likes of Rodrigo Moreno and Pablo Hernandez. Cunha, in that regard, could be an ideal replacement for Rodrigo as the two players are pretty much the same in terms of versatility.
Despite being a centre forward, the Hertha Berlin forward is much more adept in playing a number ten or even a wide role. He is, as mentioned earlier, equipped with creativity, skill and is proficient from set-pieces while also boasting a deadly right foot that makes him a scourge from long-range.
It makes him a tailor-made fit for the Premier League’s style of football. And at Leeds United, the Brazilian can emerge as a potential upgrade over Tyler Roberts, as he can complement Patrick Bamford with his productivity while also creating chances for his team.
The attacking duo of him and Raphinha will be worth keeping an eye on as well – making the 21-year-old a smart long-term investment option for Leeds United this summer.
