According to SportBild, Leeds United are interested in Matheus Cunha. The Whites are among the clubs keeping a close eye on the Hertha Berlin attacker, and the Bundesliga outfit might just be tempted to cash in on him for a fee of €40 million. Leeds United, though, are set to face stiff competition from AS Monaco, Atalanta and Napoli.
What Does Cunha Bring To The Table?
Matheus Cunha is regarded as one of the most talented players at Hertha Berlin, having joined the club in 2020 for a fee of €18 million. A centre forward by trade, he is a dynamic attacker who likes to roam freely in and around the final third.
Cunha does indeed have a lot of flair in his game and is capable of beating defenders with his quick feet. It also makes him a useful ball-carrier, even in half-spaces.
Moreover, the 22-year-old is very dangerous when it comes to shooting from outside the box, thanks to a vicious right foot, while his vision makes him a well-rounded forward. It has been reflected in his scoring tally as well, with the Brazilian scoring seven goals and registering six assists in 27 Bundesliga matches this past season.
Cunha does need to improve his decision-making in the final third, but overall, the player certainly has what it takes to thrive in the Premier League, just like his compatriot Raphinha.
Is Cunha A Good Option For Leeds United?
Leeds United are, without a doubt, in need of reinforcements in the attacking department this summer. They are bracing themselves for the departure of Pablo Hernandez while Rodrigo Moreno also faces an uncertain future at the club.
Helder Costa, too, has endured a fall from grace, notably losing his place in the starting eleven. That is where someone like Cunha could be a useful investment for Marcelo Bielsa, as he looks to beef up his options going forward.
Playing in the Bundesliga for three years now, the Brazilian has a considerable amount of experience at the highest level of football. But more importantly, he can offer that tactical versatility that could open up a host of possibilities for the Argentine mastermind next season.
Indeed, the 22-year-old can not only be considered as a potential replacement for Hernandez in the creative department, but can also be a back-up for central striker Patrick Bamford.
For a fee of €40 million, though, Matheus Cunha will certainly be a gamble as well and given the current financial climate, it would perhaps be a better option from the club’s perspective to look elsewhere and opt for a cost-effective alternative.
