In a recent interview with German news outlet SportBuzzer (translated by Football.London), VfL Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix has offered an update on his future amid recent interest from Chelsea. Lacroix said,
“I see [the rumours], but I refer those matters to my advisor because I want to concentrate on my work here at Wolfsburg and want to do a good job here.
“I’m with VfL and qualified for the Champions League with the club. I’m very happy here.
“I still have a three-year contract here and am very satisfied.
“Sure, things can always happen quickly in football, but again: I feel very comfortable at VfL and there is absolutely no reason to think about other things”.
When asked about the top teams in world football right now, the French defender went on to add,
“Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Chelsea, to name a few.”
Lacroix’s Encouraging Season In German Football
The Wolfsburg central defender is having an impressive campaign in German football where he has put in a series of solid displays over the past ten months. Lacroix has participated in 36 matches for the German outfit this term, scoring two goals and grabbing two assists in various competitions.
The 21-year-old has caught the eye by averaging 1.6 tackles, 2.2 interceptions and 4.5 clearances per 90 minutes in this Bundesliga campaign. He has even been careful when interchanging possession with others around him, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 83.4% in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
Should Chelsea Sign Lacroix This Summer?
Lacroix has decent pace under his belt that allows him to recover and get back to position when the opposition are on the front foot. He can utilize his strong 1.90m frame to dominate the opposition in the air and win some important headers for his team.
Furthermore, the Frenchman can sense the danger quickly and is proficient at timing his challenges well to earn possession back on the defensive end of the pitch. He is also not afraid to put his foot through the ball to make a clearance when required.
An up-and-coming centre-back like Lacroix will be a decent long-term acquisition for the Blues as he could grow into a future star at Stamford Bridge under the expert stewardship of Thomas Tuchel. He is already good enough to rival the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma for a regular starting place at the West London club in the coming seasons. All in all, the Blues would be wise to engineer a move to land Lacroix as he has the potential to develop into a world-class player in his position someday.
