In a recent interview with Football Insider, former Premier League defender Alan Hutton has urged Aston Villa to move in for Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham this summer. Hutton said,
“If you’re going to let Wesley go, surely he’s going to have to bring someone in.
“They’ve only got Ollie Watkins and Keinan Davis, really. Watkins has played a lot of minutes this season. To let one of your strikers go, you need to be thinking: ‘Right. We’re going to need to bring someone in.’
“Whether that’s going to be someone to challenge Ollie Watkins, like a Tammy Abraham – I can see that – or someone of that ilk. That, or you’re going to look to bring in a squad player. It’s definitely an interesting situation.”
Abraham’s Unimpressive Season At Stamford Bridge
Abraham has endured a frustrating season at the West London club as he has struggled to make himself an important member of Thomas Tuchel’s squad. The 23-year-old has played in 32 matches for the Blues this term, scoring 12 goals and grabbing six assists in multiple competitions.
The English sensation has struggled to find consistency with his performances over the past ten months after only managing to average 1.4 shots, 0.4 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League and the UEFA Champions League this season. He has also been guilty of being a bit sloppy with his ball distribution in the final third based on his pass success rate of 71.2% in both those competitions (stats via whoscored).
Should The Villans Get Abraham On Board This Summer?
Abraham can use his strength and quickness to make some powerful runs with the ball towards the opposition penalty box. He knows how to find the back of the net regularly when he is playing well on the field. However, the English marksman has struggled to gain Tuchel’s confidence which is why his career at Stamford Bridge has come to a standstill.
The Chelsea outcast could be tempted if given a chance to seal a return to Villa Park this summer. He is undoubtedly good enough to compete with Ollie Watkins for a starting spot in Dean Smith’s first team and could serve as an ideal replacement for Wesley Moraes who has struggled to impress during his time with the West Midlands club.
At 23, Abraham still has plenty of time to turn his career around for the better by finding some consistency at the highest level. He will enhance the quality of Smith’s starting XI and could help them compete for a European place in the Premier League over the next few seasons. Hence, the Villans should consider listening to Hutton’s advice by making a move to land Abraham at the end of this campaign.
