In a recent report, AS has mentioned that Barcelona are eyeing a summer move for AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer. It is understood that the Catalan club are in a good position to lure the Serie A goalie to the Nou Camp, which would also free them up to move Marc-André ter Stegen on so that they can boost their finances ahead of the new campaign (via AS).
Donnarumma’s Impressive Campaign In Italian Football
Donnarumma is having another solid season at San Siro and has done well to produce some dominant performances in between the sticks for the Milan giants. The Italian custodian has made 47 appearances for his current employers this term, conceding 54 goals and securing 14 clean sheets in all competitions.
The 22-year-old deserves a pat on the back for averaging 0.9 clearances and 5.2 long balls per game in Serie A this season. He has even distributed the ball relatively well from his penalty area after completing 77.5% of his attempted passes in the Italian top division (stats via whoscored).
The Italian talent’s current contract with AC Milan is set to expire at the end of this campaign, so Barca will be in a good position to land him if they are willing to offer him regular playing time at the Nou Camp in the coming seasons.
Is Donnarumma The Right Choice For Ronald Koeman?
Donnarumma can make some quick dives to deny the opposition and possesses excellent reflexes to pull off a few solid saves at the back. He is a solid handler of the ball as well and can come out of his lines to collect crosses and loose balls inside his penalty box.
The Italian keeper is proficient at scanning the danger quickly and can also contribute by making some important clearances for his team. He is a good passer of the ball but can sometimes give away the ball cheaply, which he needs to rectify if he wants to be a success story in La Liga.
At 22, Donnarumma has a lot of room to grow to be a top keeper, so joining the Catalans on a free transfer could be a good move for him this summer. The Italian sensation has what it takes to be a future star in European football and will be available as a free agent. Hence, he will be a great choice for Barca in the long run.
However, at the moment, Donnarumma is not at the same level as ter Stegen, but we can expect him to be a great fit for the Catalans as long as they are willing to give him time to prove his worth in Spanish football.
