In a recent report, Football.London has revealed that Arsenal defender Calum Chambers is set to be rewarded with a new contract extension. It is believed that the Gunners want to extend the English defensive ace’s contract with his current deal at the Emirates Stadium expiring at the end of next season (via Football.London).
Chambers’ Up And Down Season At North London
Chambers has been a sporadic feature in Mikel Arteta’s first XI this season as he missed a significant chunk of this campaign because of a cruciate ligament rupture. The 26-year-old has participated in 14 matches for the North London club this term, picking up two assists in the process across multiple competitions.
The Petersfield-born sensation has given a good account of himself by averaging 0.6 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 2.3 clearances, 0.8 shots and 0.6 key passes per game in the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League this season. Chambers has even taken good care of the ball when distributing it out from the back after completing 85.3% of his attempted passes in both those competitions (stats via whoscored).
The English centre-back has begun to prove his worth as a first-team starter but only time will tell whether he can steer clear of injuries and taste some success at the highest level in the coming seasons.
Chambers Set To Be Rewarded With A New Contract: Good Move For Both Parties?
Chambers has decent pace in his locker that allows him to make some important recovering runs at the back. The Arsenal talent can time his tackles well to earn possession back on the defensive end of the pitch. He can even scan the danger quickly and is not afraid to put his foot through the ball when in danger of being exposed at the back.
Finding consistency has been an issue for him during his Arsenal career but the recent signs have been quite encouraging from him. Hence, if Mikel Arteta believes he can get the best out of Chambers over the next few seasons, the Gunners boss should consider offering the player a contract extension.
The three-time England international could still serve as a decent squad player at the English capital. Therefore, Arteta would be wise to tie Chambers down to a new deal as it will be a good move for both the player and the club in the short term.
